Setauket Harbor House

Perched on a remarkable site overlooking Setauket Harbor and Little Bay in East Setauket, this custom residence thoughtfully marries elements of traditional and modern architecture to create a unique home fitting to the client’s personal tastes. The design draws inspiration from the region’s shingle-style heritage, reimagined with striking innovative elements.

The home’s massing is composed of double gable forms, clad in eastern white cedar shingles and local stone, grounding it in the local vernacular. A horizontal, corten metal-clad volume intervenes, arching outward to create a dynamic contrast and a distinct modern identity. This interplay of forms balances tradition with innovation, harmonizing with the neighborhood while standing apart.

Large expanses of glass open the interiors to sweeping harbor views, flooding spaces with natural light and fostering a seamless connection to the rustic surroundings. Wood slatting provides privacy and screening, adding texture while maintaining openness. The exterior materials—cedar, stone, and corten—carry into the interiors, blurring the line between inside and out. Custom millwork enhances the home’s functionality, crafted to reflect the client’s unique style and needs.

Setauket Harbor House offers a refined balance of tradition and modernity, creating a welcoming, distinctive home that celebrates its extraordinary waterfront setting. Every detail, from the material palette to the thoughtful siting, ensures the home feels both rooted in its context and forward-looking
