Modern Retirement Community Design at The Amsterdam at Harborside
This retirement community design project at the Amsterdam at Harborside (now just known as The Harborside) gave Mojo Stumer the opportunity to redesign pivotal communal spaces around the complex. The main objective here was to create spaces that flow freely into one another in order to enhance the serenity of the community as a whole. Mojo Stumer focused on using organic materials and modern finishes while allowing copious amounts of natural light to filter through, making every space feel larger and less confining. Senior living architecture and design is nuanced, with many necessary details that are normally not integrated into traditional housing.
Starting at the entrance, wide double glass doors open up to the spacious stone-clad lobby, complete with a dynamic receptionist’s desk and customized seating options for guests. Wood details can be seen throughout the community with metal accents, which elevates the sense of modernity. The hallways on either side of the lobby have carpet inlays that complement the art on the walls, while the vertical lighting draws the eye up to create the illusion of higher ceilings. Because the Amsterdam at Harborside is a senior living facility, it was important to integrate a lot of light, glass, and bright spaces into the retirement community design.
Mojo Stumer’s work with senior living architecture and design has allowed us to create meaningful spaces where people can make memories for a lifetime. The dining room portion of the project needed to be large enough to accommodate the residents as well as any guests they may have, so Mojo Stumer made sure to include a customized hostess stand and built-in seating in case that was ever needed. Hardwood floors were laid in a singular direction pointing to the outside, to draw eyes toward the windows and the view. Customized carpet flanks on both sides of the dining room, with many options of table sizes to cater to different sized groups. The beautiful outdoor patio adds a final touch to the dining room, with the ability to eat al fresco whenever desired.
Senior living architecture and design is all about taking note of the needs of those living in the community and figuring out how to incorporate each need with the utmost ease. Mojo Stumer recognizes that retirement community design is never “one size fits all,” and our work at The Amsterdam at Harborside reflects just that. Looking for design help?
